The Centre is working to find a solution to protect consumers interests and is undertaking talks with the pharmaceutical sector amid accusations that pharmacists force clients to buy a complete strip of tablets or capsules. The compelled purchase of a complete strip of medicine wastes medical resources and places an undue financial strain on clients.

According to reports, the Department of Consumer Affairs held the first round of consultations with top pharmaceutical and medical device industry leaders. Top officials from Indias Drug Controller General were also present at the meeting.

The department has received complaints about pharmacies needing to sell a complete strip of 10 pills or capsules. It has proposed novel packaging technology, perforation technology, printing the manufacturers and expiration date on each strip, and QR code. The agency has received multiple customer complaints about pharmacists needing to sell a complete strip of 10 pills or capsules.

Chemists are fine with cutting the strip and selling the needed medicine to consumers; however, distributors or pharmaceutical Companies are hesitant to accept unsold drugs if the strips are cut.
